Differences Between Chlorinated Paraffins and Chlorinated Wax

Chlorinated paraffins and chlorinated wax are not exactly the same thing, but they have some overlapping ingredients and properties.

Chlorinated Paraffins
Chlorinated paraffins are chemicals produced by reacting paraffins (usually saturated hydrocarbons extracted from petroleum) with chlorine. The degree of chlorination of chlorinated paraffins can be adjusted according to the application requirements, and they are usually divided into short-chain (SCCP), medium-chain (MCCP) and long-chain (LCCP) chlorinated paraffins. It is mainly used as a plasticizer, flame retardant, lubricant and additive, and is widely used in plastics (especially PVC), rubber, coatings and other industrial products.

Chlorinated Wax
Chlorinated wax usually refers to chlorinated wax substances, which can be natural waxes (such as beeswax) or paraffin wax. Chlorinated wax is a product obtained by reacting wax with chlorine gas. It has a low degree of chlorination and is usually used to improve the heat resistance of wax, increase its melting point, improve surface smoothness, etc. It is commonly used in lubricants, wax polishes, plastic additives, coatings and other fields.

Main differences:
Source:
Chlorinated paraffins are usually derived from the chlorination of paraffin or other petroleum products, and are mainly used in functional applications such as plasticizers and flame retardants.
Chlorinated wax may be a chlorinated product of natural wax (such as beeswax) or paraffin, and its application is more to improve the properties of wax, such as increasing heat resistance and lubricity.
Degree of chlorination:
Chlorinated paraffins usually have a high degree of chlorination, especially short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCP) and long-chain chlorinated paraffins (LCCP). This high degree of chlorination gives them good flame retardant and plasticizing properties.
Chlorinated wax has a relatively low degree of chlorination, which is more for improving the hardness and surface properties of wax.

Although their raw materials and chlorination processes may be similar, there are certain differences between chlorinated paraffins and chlorinated wax in terms of application areas, degree of chlorination and functions. Chlorinated paraffins are more commonly used in industries such as plastics, rubber and coatings as plasticizers and flame retardants, while chlorinated wax is mainly used to improve the properties of wax products.
